European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
