Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
