The anticipation about the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
