The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
