Roughly fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior official commented the incident rendered him stunned and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
